Jeff's Rule

The Repeatable Drinks Philosophy

Jeff only shares drinks you can make consistently. If a cocktail needs seven specialty ingredients and a blowtorch, it's not repeatable — and it's not on this page. Every cocktail here uses bourbon you already have, a few staples from the bar, and takes under three minutes. They taste incredible the first time and the hundredth time. That's the promise.

Bourbon old fashioned cocktail
The Signature

The Perfect Bourbon Old Fashioned

This is the drink that defines bourbon culture, and it's the one Jeff makes most often. Six ingredients, three minutes, zero fuss. The secret is in the stir — you're not shaking this drink, you're gently chilling it while preserving the silky texture of the whiskey. A large ice cube keeps it cold without diluting too fast. Express those orange oils over the top and you've got a cocktail that's been perfect for two hundred years.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon (your favorite — Jeff uses a Kentucky straight)
  • 1 sugar cube (or 1 tsp simple syrup for speed)
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • Splash of water
  • Orange peel for garnish
  • 1 large ice cube

Instructions

  1. Sweeten the glass. Place the sugar cube in the bottom of an Old Fashioned glass. Saturate it with both bitters and a splash of water. Muddle until the sugar is dissolved. (Using simple syrup? Skip the muddling — just stir it in.)
  2. Add the bourbon. Pour in the bourbon and add a large ice cube. The big cube melts slowly, keeping your drink cold without watering it down.
  3. Stir, don't shake. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20-30 seconds. You want the drink well-chilled and silky, not cloudy. Stirring is the difference between a proper Old Fashioned and a mediocre one.
  4. Express the orange. Take a wide strip of orange peel and hold it over the glass, skin-side down. Give it a sharp twist to release the essential oils over the surface of the drink. Rub the peel around the rim, then drop it in.
  5. Serve. That's it. The perfect Old Fashioned in three minutes. Take a sip and understand why this drink has lasted two centuries.
Jeff's Tip: The quality of your bourbon matters here more than in any mixed drink, because there's nothing to hide behind. Use something you'd happily sip neat. And always express the orange peel — those oils are what give the drink its aromatic signature.
Classic & Bold

Bourbon Manhattan

The Manhattan is the Old Fashioned's sophisticated cousin — same whiskey-forward philosophy, but with sweet vermouth adding a rich, botanical depth. Stirred, not shaken, and always served up or on a single cube. The cherry is non-negotiable.

  • Brandied cherry for garnish

  3. Garnish. Drop in a brandied cherry. Sip slowly and feel undeniably classy.
Bright & Balanced

Bourbon Sour

The Bourbon Sour is proof that bourbon plays beautifully with bright, citrus flavors. The lemon cuts through the warmth of the whiskey, and if you add the egg white, you get a silky, frothy texture that elevates this from a simple drink to a proper cocktail. Don't be intimidated by the egg white — it's easier than it sounds.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • 1 egg white (optional, for silky texture)
  • Ice
  • Lemon wheel and cherry for garnish

Instructions

  1. Dry shake. Add bourbon, lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white to a shaker without ice. Shake hard for 15 seconds — this "dry shake" whips the egg white into a frothy foam.
  2. Wet shake. Add ice to the shaker and shake again for another 15 seconds until well-chilled.
  3. Strain and garnish. Double-strain into a rocks glass over fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon wheel and a cherry. The foam should sit beautifully on top.
Jeff's Tip: No egg white? No problem — the drink is still great without it. But if you want that bar-quality silky texture, the egg white is worth it. Use fresh lemon juice, never bottled. The difference is night and day.
Autumn in a Glass

Bourbon Apple Cider

When the leaves turn and the air gets crisp, this is the drink. Warm apple cider, bourbon, cinnamon, and a squeeze of lemon — it's like a Kentucky autumn in a glass. Serve it warm for a cozy evening or over ice for a refreshing fall afternoon sip.
